A watch holder with a geometric mosaic border by James Medhurst of Weymouth.
Makers label to the base reads as follows:
"Made from the Columbine, Wrecked on Portland Beach November 28 1838.
She was a fine vessel built in Africa. Was bound for the river Gambia (being her 16th
voyage), having on board a missionary & his wife & four other passengers. In Portland Race a terrible gale sprang up & she began to near the shore, the man being forced from the helm, the vessel hove round & being caught between two seas was dashed to pieces & every soul on board her perished. The wood is a beautifully scented cedar & forms a superb PRESENT FROM WEYMOUTH, J Medhurst, Manufacturer, Esplanadeā.
