A small stickware barrel with simple straight- line inlay containing a Stanhope viewer. Entitled a ”Souvenir from the Catskills” there are four views from the Catskill Mountains, an area in New York State: Shinglekill Falls, Kaaterskill Falls, Haines Falls & Round Top from Forge Road.
Whilst a modest piece of stickware this little barrel is especially interesting as it is likely to be a rare example from the workshop of Boyce, Brown & Kemp, who were known to have incorporated Stanhope viewers into Tunbridge Ware items post 1880. An advertisement in The Tunbridge Wells Advertiser of 28th February 1892 indicates that Boyce, Brown & Kemp were using Stanhopes with views of Tunbridge Wells in Tunbridge Ware dip penholders.
The inclusion of foreign views in such items of Tunbridge Ware appears to be hitherto unknown but it is not unlikely that Boyce, Brown & Kemp would have been interested in the American market as their business had a similar bias to that of Henry Hollamby. Primarily as a wholesaler, Hollamby had pursued the American market and had gone as far as to produce a block of The Capitol in Washington. On the closure of Hollamby’s business in 1891 Boyce Brown & Kemp took over many of his designs and blocks.
Boyce, Brown & Kemp were working at a time when the Tunbridge Ware industry was struggling to compete with an influx of relatively cheap imports and they were known to favour novelty items in an attempt to retain interest in their products.
